 The
first resort in the country to be opened and the nearest to the Airport,
Kurumba remains a beautiful looking island. Built on the island is a top
class city hotel.
The obvious choice for businessmen and visiting VIPs, it also suits
holiday-makers who enjoy being in an environment of luxury and service.
Now this probably includes all of us, but the reality is that you get less
of a sense of the real Maldives here than usual. The focus of the resort
is as much inward to the swimming pools, restaurants and bars as it is
outward to the beach and lagoon.
 No other
island is as fully landscaped as this one. It is like one large garden,
with colorful flowers (from tiny border plants to bowers of bougain villa)
and trimmed hedges under a canopy of tall coconut palms. Around about you
will find the five restaurants, the coffee shop and the pizza outlet. The
specialty restaurants are a Chinese, a French, an Indian and a Grill.
Their reputation could be higher.
  The
largest swimming pool is a lovely creation centrally placed in front of
the open sided main bar. This, in many ways, is the hub of the resort.
Tucked away in the interior is the second pool, within the sports centre,
which also has two tennis courts, a gym, sauna and snooker table.
Of the 177
rooms in total, there are 8 suites, of which 4 are "presidential" and 4
are "junior". These are lovely large rooms built and fitted to a high
standard and carpeted throughout. The other rooms are deluxe; pleasantly
decorated and well fitted-out. But with so many to fit onto a small island
they are smaller than might be expected.
 Outside
every room is the welcome shade of tall palms and beyong that, the beach.
It is a good beach all around the island, giving a choice of wide open
stretches and little private areas between bushes. In a few areas
unsightly old groynes extend fro the shore, but more unsightly is the wall
of coral built inside the reef edge all the way around. The best that can
be said of this, is that after a while you no longer notice it.
  Despite
its proximity to Male' and its outer harbour the water is still
wonderfully clear and the reef edge still offers excellent snorkelling.
Diving too is very good as the sites in South Male' Atoll are accessible,
as well as the roster of well-known sites in this part of North Male'.
Kurumba is an
up-market resort which is beautiful to look at and extremely well
serviced. The well-rained, uniformed staff and to the more formal
atmosphere that exists here. If you are happy to pay for service, good
looks and luxury, you might well be happy here.
